Responsibilities

Job Purpose

 

The Environmental Compliance and Conservation team is responsible for environmental compliance and identifying and managing risk and continual improvement opportunities for Pattern’s operating assets in North America. 

 

The Environmental Compliance and Conservation Manager will be responsible for overseeing environmental compliance for operating projects within Pattern’s fleet (with a focus on Canadian projects), ensuring success in meeting environmental regulatory and permit requirements as well as those of Pattern’s Environmental Management System.  The Environmental Compliance and Conservation Manager will also be responsible for identifying potential risks and emerging environmental issues as well as opportunities for continuous improvement of environmental practices and procedures.   Key subject matter areas of responsibility include wildlife, vegetation (stormwater management, restoration and invasive species management), air and spill prevention and management.  

 

 

Key Accountabilities

  • Overseeing environmental permit and regulatory compliance for various operating sites
    • Lead external stakeholder engagement opportunities, acting as a liaison with regulators, First Nation communities & partners, and independent contractors
  • Hiring and managing third-party contractors during Operations as required to meet environmental regulation and project-specific permit obligations, overseeing budget, scope execution and deliverables
  • Supporting implementation and continuous improvement of Pattern’s Environmental Management System, analyzing data to produce lessons learned and identify and develop improvement initiatives
  • Developing strategies and action plans for new and emerging environmental issues and risks, working with a cross-functional team of internal stakeholders (e.g. Asset Management, Field Operations, Operations Engineering, Data Analytics).
  • Represent Pattern on relevant industry organization groups and technical committees
  • Collaborating with other departments on environmental initiatives, including Government Relations, Finance, Field Operations, Environmental Permitting, and Construction.
  • Develop and manage annual environmental project and corporate budgets
  • Other projects as assigned.
  • Travel as needed (expectation of approximately 30% travel time required)

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an Environmental Management, or a science-oriented field such as Biology, Ecology, Environmental Sciences, Wildlife, etc., or other relevant field of study.    
  • 7 + years’ experience in an energy related environmental team, preferably in wind energy or electrical transmission and preferably in operations.
  • Demonstrated expertise in environmental natural resource management related regulations, (especially wildlife, species at risk), stormwater management permitting, applicable spill and air regulations.   Some experience with Canadian regulations is preferred.
  • Strategic thinker with an ability to critically evaluate technical information along with an analysis of risk and cost to develop creative solutions to environmental challenges  
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and an ability to express ideas effectively and produce high quality deliverables are essential.
  • Strong project management skills, with ability to manage scope, risk, deliverables and budget to successfully meet project goals
  • Detail oriented with a proven ability to execute and maintain compliance with multiple and sometimes complex regulatory obligations.  Ability to make reasonable and informed interpretations of requirements and advise operating sites accordingly.
  • Must be able to work in a collaborative environment where teamwork and independent work ethic are essential.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to influence best practices and change within an organization.
  • The ability to manage a diverse set of assets and to effectively interact and communicate with team members, facility managers, and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to synthesize and organize large amounts of data.
  • Ability to organize time well and set proper priorities.

The expected starting pay range for this role is $103,000 - $139,000 USD. This range is an estimate and base pay may be above or below the ranges based on several factors including but not limited to location, work experience, certifications, and education. In addition to base pay, Pattern’s compensation program includes a bonus structure for full-time employees of all levels.
