Responsibilities

Job Purpose

The incumbent will have primary responsibility for technical accounting analyses, preparation of memoranda to support accounting conclusions, and application of technical accounting analyses to transactions. This position will also support preparation of the annual corporate financials, corporate audits and (25+) individual project-level annual audit reports. This position will, in collaboration with the Controller, Assistant Controller, and Accounting Managers, be responsible to encourage and develop relationships with commercial and finance professionals across the organization to support and analyze acquisitions and other transactions.

Incumbent must be willing to work reasonable overtime hours to meet closing and reporting deadlines and to travel as required.

Reporting Relationships
Functional line of control for the purpose of management, performance and remuneration reviews is the Assistant Controller.

Key Contacts

Key internal relationships will include the corporate and operational accounting and consolidation groups, the corporate tax, legal, and finance groups as well as other business development and operational management. Externally, key relationships will include Pattern’s audit and accounting advisory firms, and service providers related to transaction valuation support and services. The incumbent can expect to have substantial interaction with senior management and with the Audit Committee and Board of Directors.

 

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead the research and documentation of technical accounting issues related to material transactions, as well as, communication of conclusions to management, the accounting team and auditors.
  • Work closely with accounting managers and general ledger accountants to apply technical accounting principles.
  • Lead and develop technical accounting group. Actively support professional and career development of technical accounting staff.
  • Manage the accounting and reconciliation of certain general ledger accounts, including unconsolidated investments, debt and derivatives.
  • Manage the preparation of the annual corporate financials and support the annual audit.
  • Manage the preparation of individual project-level audits (25 plus) – principally US GAAP but will also include some IFRS audits.
  • Lead analysis and documentation of differences between US GAAP and other statutory GAAP such as IFRS, JGAAP and Canadian GAAP.
  • Work with commercial/origination teams to provide accounting analysis of prospective transactions – acquisitions, joint ventures and tax equity structures.
  • Support preparation of written accounting policies in close coordination with the assistant controller and operational accounting management.
  • Lead special projects as requested.

Qualifications

Experience/Qualifications/Education Required

Educational Requirements

A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting is required.  A graduate degree in accounting (or tax) is desirable.  CPA certification required. 

Required Work Experience

  • Candidates should have public accounting experience, preferable with a “big-4” firm.  Public company/SEC reporting experience is a plus.
  • Deep knowledge of US GAAP accounting standards is required.  Knowledge of IFRS accounting standards is a plus.  Experience with public company internal control standards is essential.
  • Experience in the power generation or energy industry and familiarity in industry accounting standards is highly desirable. 
  • The candidate should have a minimum of 12 to 15 years of experience in public accounting or a combination of public accounting and industry.
  • Strong US GAAP technical accounting skill-set with broad knowledge and experience of external reporting requirements (private company and SEC-level disclosures).
  • Ability to prepare financial statements for multiple entities. The use of Workiva software or similar reporting platform is desirable.
  • Substantial experience preparing audit-quality technical accounting analyses and documentation is essential.
  • Experience in a fast-paced, high growth environment highly desirable.
  • Interested in an applied accounting environment with substantial interaction with non-accounting commercial professionals and general ledger accountants.

Technical Skills

  • Ability to lead and conduct research on technical accounting issues and prepare high quality, persuasive, written memoranda and communicate conclusions to management, accounting team and auditors
  • Ability to motivate direct and cross-functional teams to produce quality work products within tight timeframes and simultaneously manage several projects.
  • Knowledge of accounting for derivatives, leases, business combinations, foreign subsidiaries, consolidations, tax equity structures, debt refinancing, and energy transactions.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, transactional, environment.
