    Responsibilities

    JOB PURPOSE

    This position will be responsible for monitoring and promoting environmental compliance for Pattern’s operating renewable energy projects, with a primary focus on wind energy projects in Canada (including Ontario, British Columbia, Manitoba and Quebec) and with ancillary support for compliance efforts in the United States and other foreign jurisdictions.  Pattern’s environmental operations team provides ongoing compliance services to the operations and asset management team, as well as specialized advice and support to our business development, financing and legal teams.

    Responsibilities for this position will include, but will not be limited to, working with municipal, regional, provincial and federal regulatory authorities to facilitate and obtain compliance with environmental legal commitments and best practices of our operating wind projects. The successful applicant will be responsible for the creation and implementation of mitigation strategies for multiple environmental resources and supporting the organization’s key operating objectives.

     

    Key Accountabilities

    The key responsibilities will include as a minimum the following:

    • Supervising the work of project environmental consultants, managing project schedules and budgets and ensuring quality of documents
    • Overseeing compliance with applicable Provincial, Federal and First Nations environmental regulations (including the Ontario Renewable Energy Approval, and provincial and federal species-at-risk regulations) applicable to our operating projects
    • Overseeing the preparation of environmental site assessments and other studies for the operating wind facilities
    • Overseeing the environmental compliance during construction activities
    • Implementation of strategies to mitigate environmental impacts of wind energy projects, and working directly with project stakeholders (including governmental authorities and joint venture partners) to achieve these goals
    • Responding to internal environmental-related inquiries in support of project financing and third-party due diligence
    • Establishing and maintaining sustainable relationships and good communications with consultants, vendors, sub-contractors and project stakeholders
    • Implementing post-construction monitoring at operating sites
    • Coordinating with Development Environmental Team in their creation of an environmental/permitting compliance matrix for handoff to Construction/OPS Group
    • Attending agency meetings as needed, and leading strategy meetings in preparation
    • Training and guidance to staff regarding environmental affairs
    • Demonstrated ability in developing and/or operations of wind projects through complex permitting environments
    • Travel to field sites is required, domestic and international
    • Must possess strengths in the following:
      • Creativity in problem solving and analytical skills
      • High level of attention to detail, including document preparation and writing skills
      • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication and organizational skills. Must possess strong communication skills, including first-rate drafting and editing abilities
      • Capacity to manage multiple projects at the same time
      • Ability to quickly gain working knowledge of key and emerging issues in wind and solar power siting and permitting
    • Ability to speak French is an asset

    Qualifications

    Experience/Qualifications/Education Required

    Educational Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study
    • 10 + years’ experience in energy project development or operations environmental team
    • Demonstrated problem solving, negotiating and oral written communication skills
    • Ability to work independently to meet deliverables
    • Preference may be given to candidates with the following:
      • Advanced degree in Law, Biology, Environmental Sciences, Business or comparable degree.
      • Demonstration of effective leadership and team building skills
      • Prior experience in wind and or solar power permitting and environmental review
      • Understanding and experience in environmental policy, and/or other provincial and local land use and environmental permitting processes

    Technical Skills

    Working knowledge of Windows-based business software applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
