    Responsibilities

    JOB PURPOSE

    The position will have responsibility for supporting all aspects of generation interconnection, delivery strategies, strategic transmission development and acquisition and basis analysis for company’s renewable energy development portfolio. The successful applicant will implement these strategies by assessing interconnection and transmission opportunities, preparing interconnection documents, and managing the Company’s overall transmission positions. The position will be responsible for analysis that informs Pattern’s view and forecast of congestion on various transmission systems throughout North America. 

    Key Accountabilities

    • Assist in evaluation of potential project sites based on powerflow data, queue evaluation, delivery options, and physical transmission access.
    • Support and/or lead the interconnection process for Pattern projects, from assessment of interconnection options, filing of necessary applications, evaluation of utility technical studies, and negotiation of interconnection agreements.
    • Ability to develop high level conceptual design of electrical facilities within Wind or Solar generation facilities. 
    • Estimate cost and necessary facilities for connection of generation to the Bulk Electric System.
    • Understand inverter based generation behavior and impacts on electrical transmission systems (SSO, weak grid, reactive power, etc) and ensure compliance with technical interconnection requirements.
    • Provide assessments of transmission-related market dynamics, such as LMP pricing, nodal basis risks, congestion risks, etc. using available data or by performing SCED analysis in a commercially available software tool.
    • Thoroughly and concisely document and explain interconnection status to internal Project Developers and third-parties during project development and financing.
    • Assist Power Marketing in communicating interconnection position(s), status, timeline, and congestion risk for Pattern Projects to potential counterparties.
    • Ability to work with and manage technical consultants
    • Monitor and report on transmission related regulatory and trade group topics as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Educational Requirements

    Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering is required. Emphasis in Power Systems or equivalent practical experience preferred.

    Required Work Experience

    A minimum of 3-5 years in the electrical industry. Transmission Planning experience with a utility, RTO/ISO, or consulting firm is important. Knowledge of Power Markets and production cost modelling software is a plus. Direct experience in wind and solar farm design or construction and field experience is a plus. 

     

    Additional Requirements

    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Must be willing and able to travel.
    • Ability to prioritize requests.
    • Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, FERC transmission tariffs and RTO/ISO interconnection processes
    • Travel up to 20%
    • Thorough understanding of electrical power engineering language and terms.
    • A keen business sense beyond engineering and a sense of urgency in completing a job.
    • EIT or Professional Engineering Registration encouraged.
    • Experience developing power flow base cases and running either PowerWorld, PSSE or PSLF with the ability to evaluate results
    • Analysis of Transmission using PTI MUST and/or TARA

    Preferred Technical Skills

    • Experience with or desire to learn Promod, U-Plan, and/or Probe.
    • Must be proficient in typical software applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Project.
