The position will support leading activities for safe and environmentally responsible execution of wind projects during construction and operations.  The EHS Specialist will serve as a subject matter expert and group lead on environmental compliance for spills, waste and chemicals while also supporting health and safety.


Key Accountabilities

  • Participate in the continuous improvement and implementation of environmental, health and safety (EHS) policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Schedule and perform environmental assessments and develop action plans to correct deficiencies. Work with facility management to execute action plans.
  • Manage permit compliance activities as it relates to spills, waste and chemicals of projects including: state and Federal agency consultations, and regulatory requirements to include ensuring that permits are obtained, renewed, and closed as needed for operating sites. Oversee thorough review of submittals to agencies and external parties for completeness and accuracy.
  • Ensure that all environmental records and documentation are also maintained.
  • Ensure that site specific and corporate environmental spill and waste plans and programs are implemented and maintained as required by Federal, state and local regulatory requirements.
  • Perform and support annual EHS site assessments.
  • Manage online SDS program.
  • Assist with EHS implementation for new projects.
  • Develop and deliver wind specific EHS training to employees and contractors.
  • Coordinate as needed with the Director, Environmental Compliance to ensure comprehensive environmental compliance coverage and clear division of responsibilities.


Experience/Qualifications/Education Required


Educational Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, industrial hygiene, engineering or other closely related degree.  Job experience, professional development and continuing education may be substituted for educational experience.


Required Work Experience


Position requires a minimum of 2 years of experience in an environmental compliance role and/or, health and safety, preferably with utilities or wind energy technology.


Additional/Preferred Requirements

  • Knowledge and/or experience with environmental US and Canadian laws, regulation and standards relating to environmental, health and safety, with emphasis on National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Clean Water Act (CWA), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and/or renewable energy permitting is preferred
  • Experience in managing compliance of environmental, health and safety regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Experience in a role of oversight of contractor or project EHS management.
  • Thorough working knowledge of environmental, health and safety principles.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 50% to support remote renewable energy projects.
  • Ability to occasionally perform physical tasks including standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, twisting, reaching, and climbing at facility locations
  • Willingness and ability to climb up to 300 feet on a vertical ladder is preferred
  • Power generation/wind industry specific EHS experience is preferred.
